We created this slide a while back for Petco, as part of a project where we were helping them rethink how marketing techniques could influence revenue more directly. At the time, we paired something analytical (the bar code) with something unmistakably human: a person walking a dog on an autumn afternoon. I didn’t think much of it then, but looking at it now, on the day before a holiday, it carries a different kind of resonance.
There is something about the holidays that pulls our attention toward warmth. Not sentimentality, but warmth in the cognitive sense: cues that soften the edges of our thinking and make memories more likely to stick. Quite often, what we remember tends to have a soft edge: texture, humanity, a small imperfection or sensory cue that disarms the overly analytical mind.
In this slide, the geometric bars keep the viewer grounded, but the dog and the leaves warm the cognition just enough to make the message feel alive. As you prepare content for the weeks ahead (holiday messaging, end-of-year summaries, or strategic plans) consider the same balance. Add one warm edge to a sharp idea. It doesn’t take much, just enough for the brain to register, “This matters. This is for me.”
