The brain's approach to feedback
Here is a bar chart from a neuroscience study I did on AI vs. human feedback. In the study, B2B sellers completed an AI simulation during which they wanted to learn better skills for conducting a discovery call with customers. One group was then given feedback by a human (HF) on how the sellers performed during the simulation, and another group was given feedback by an AI coach (AIF). Here are some results from the alpha asymmetry analysis, which indicate whether people were likely to approach a stimulus or withdraw from it. We divided the analysis into four phases that sellers completed during the study: training themselves on some skills related to discovery calls, completing the actual simulation with a customer, waiting for feedback (anticipation), and receiving feedback. When analyzing alpha power in these contexts, a more negative score typically means withdrawal motivation and avoidance. A positive score suggests approach motivation or readiness to act.
You can tell quickly that, with one exception, the AIF bars are more “negative” than the Human bars. Keep in mind, though, that alpha power does not mean negative emotion... we are only addressing approach or withdrawal behavior. Sellers expecting or receiving AI feedback seemed to be in a more cautious or defensive motivational state. During the Simulation phase, HF is more negative than AIF. One possible interpretation is that sellers who knew they would receive human feedback experienced the live performance moment as more intense or threatening.
The Feedback phase is especially interesting. Sellers receiving AI feedback appeared more motivationally guarded during the learning segment, especially while anticipating and receiving feedback. Human feedback may have felt more evaluative during performance, but more approach-oriented once the feedback was actually delivered. So...while AI feedback may teach skills, it’s the human feedback that makes people more ready to receive them. More ammunition (if you need it) to keep humans in the loop.
